Each year Surfshot Magazine shines a light on California’s up-and-coming 20 surfers under the age of twenty. In 2009 Matix’s Tyler Stanaland is one of these 20 under twenty. At 6’2” and 195 lbs. Stanaland wasn’t selected for his small wave competitive prowess but for his dedication and determination to waves that match his stature in hopes of paying future dividends. While others are taking two to the beach, Stanaland has been putting in time at the Mentawais, Teahupoo, Pipeline and Oregon slabs. That is one way of turning a penny stock into a home run investment. When asked about his future plans, “Going to Tavarua on Jeff Booth’s week, learning Cloudbreak from Boothy and more North Shore time,” was Tyler’s response.
“It’s an honor to be on the same list as Nat (Young), Kolohe (Andino), (Dillon) Perillo, Courtney (Conlogue) and the others,” Stanaland said. “I was really surprised as they are on such another level competitively and exposure wise but I’m really stoked to get my foot in the door with some of the bigger named kids around here,” he added. In the future, Tyler plans on throwing his hat in the competitive ring a bit more at some of the heavier WQS stops as well. Check out Tyler’s footage from Teahupoo and from a recent Matix Mondays of him in the Mentawais. |
